C. Edward Moore, 73, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at his home in Burnt Chimney, VA. Mr. Moore was a native of Seaford, DE. He graduated in 1961 from the University of Delaware, where he also earned a master's degree. He earned a second master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Maryland. All of his degrees were in mathematics. Mr. Moore taught math at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, for 36 years, rising to full professor. He spearheaded the effort to establish academic support services for midshipmen and was the first Director of Tutoring Programs. He developed a thorough set of notes incorporating Maple computer software as a Calculus teaching tool and coauthored the book "Structured Programming with True BASIC." He was named Professor Emeritus upon retirement. Carrying on a family tradition, he was a master woodworker. He designed and crafted custom furniture for homes in Annapolis. Artifacts of Maryland history are displayed at the state's Court of Appeals Building in a case built by Mr. Moore. He authored numerous articles for woodworking publications. He shifted his attention to woodturning and made his mark with ornaments and decorative boxes. He led the organization of the Smith Mountain Lake Woodturners Club and was an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son Steven E. and wife, Julie; son Andrew L.; grandchildren Samuel and Charlotte; and brother, James L., of Wilmington DE. A memorial service will be held November 18, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, VA, where Mr. Moore was a member. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 110 Hilltop Drive, Rocky Mount VA 24151, or Roanoke Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke VA 24018.
