Chief David Robert “Buddy” Cundiff passed away, Friday, October 24, 2014. David was appointed Chief of Police for the Town of Rocky Mount in June, 2010 after serving 30 years with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, a position he was honored to fulfill. David was proud of each member of the Rocky Mount Police Department and the citizens they protect. He was also elected to serve on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors in 2008 as the Union Hall representative and was appointed Chairman in 2012. He loved the people of Franklin County and strived to move the county forward. David was also passionate about agriculture. He was a fifth generation farmer of tobacco, beef cattle and grain.
He was President of the Franklin County Farm Bureau and was currently serving on the Virginia Tobacco Commission. He was a member of the Extension Leadership Council, Agricultural Development Association, Penhook Ball Park, past President of the Franklin County Cattleman's Association and the Franklin County FFA Alumni Chapter. He was also a lifetime member and past president of the Glade Hill Rescue Squad.
David was born on March 6, 1957, the youngest child of Thomas Calvin (T. C.) and Dorothy Ramsey Cundiff. He was preceded in death by his father T. C.; brother, Ronald Wayne Cundiff and his mother-in-law, Peggy C. Turman. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Tina Turman Cundiff and the light of his life, their son, Ethan Robert Cundiff; his mother, Dorothy Ramsey Cundiff of Penhook; four siblings; Terry (Patsy) Cundiff of Surfside Beach, SC, Barbara Humphries (Frank) of Roanoke, Thomas C. “Tommy” (Kathy) Cundiff of Glade Hill, Betty Finch of Thaxton; his father-in-law, W. Glenn Turman of Penhook; brother-in-law and and sister-in-law, Rev. Stephen and Debbie Creech of Shenandoah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 31st at 11:00 a.m. at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 100 Hilltop Drive, Rocky Mount with the Rev. Jackie Spence officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, October 30th, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Interment will be at Liberty Cemetery in Pittsylvania County.
