Desmond Hale

On September 8, 2014 Desmond (Des) Dale Hale, age 92 of Ferrum, joined the love of his life, Estelle, to flatfoot down the streets of gold. Des lived a long and productive life and was ready to meet his maker. We rejoice that he has traveled to heaven to join his wife Estelle Underwood Hale, his parents, Robert Oliver Kemper and Mary Magdalene Drewry Hale. Also preceding him on his journey were 5 sisters and four brothers. Left to cherish his memory is his daughters Mabel Hale Webb and husband Jackie, Tammy Jo Hale; sons Tommy and his wife Wanda, Ray and his wife Terry, Kenny and his wife Donna; grandchildren Brian Webb and wife Donna, Katrina Cokendolpher and husband Josh, Scottie Hale, Angie Furrow, Josh Hale, Jordan Hale; also extended grandchildren Amanda, Justin, Joe and Michael and Brianna and R.J. He is also survived by 15 great grandchildren; a very special family friend and angel of a caregiver Macie Boitnott and three sisters-in-law Bevoline Gibson, Thelma Furrow and Betty Hale. Des was a retired gas and oil truck driver and prided himself on knowing so many people in Franklin County. He was a charter member of the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department and Crossroads Ruritan Club. He was also a member of the VFW and DAV. He was a big fan of Blue Grass music and Crooked Road events. After family, the thing he was most proud of was his service in the US Army during WWII. He was the recipient of 16 medals including The Purple Heart. The family would like to express their appreciation for the wonderful care, love and dedication shown by Macie and the Virginia Veterans Care Center. A special thanks to his roommate Albert Lumsden for all his help and kindness to Daddy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ferrum Volunteer Fire and/or Rescue Squad or the charity of your choice. Funeral services will be conducted from Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home (Town Chapel) 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Steve Tilley officiating. Interment will follow in the Hale-Young Family Cemetery on Sawmill Rd. His family will be receiving friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Jackie and Mable Webb, 190 Cromwell Dr., Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
