Dorothy Mae Harter, 79, of Rocky Mount, VA (previously Penhook, VA), went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 27, 2021 due to papillary thyroid cancer.
She was born on February 23, 1942 to Charles H. Young & Helen M. Young in Beaver Falls, PA. She was a stay-at-home mom who raised two kids and then worked in the Fairfax County Public Library system. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and had a passion for teaching children about the Lord. It was not unusual to find her swaying and clapping to the beat of the Sunday morning music during the worship services. As a seamstress, she made clothes for her granddaughter’s dolls, angel costumes for the church’s Christmas program, and many other creative projects. She also enjoyed cross stitching and duck pin bowling.
She originally resided in Falls Church, VA until 1997 when she and her husband Stan retired and moved to Penhook, VA, to be near her grandchildren.
Special thanks to the following Lewis Gale Physicians and for their “words of wisdom”: the late Dr. George Maxymiv (who first discovered the thyroid cancer), Dr. Brian Gross (Otolaryngology), and Dr. Kamran Rasul (Endocrinology). We also thank the incredible Blue Ridge Cancer Care Lewis Gale staff including Sara, Nicole, Dr. John Rogers and Dr. Andrew Fintel. Thank you Fork Mountain Rescue Squad for your assistance and help. To the Carilion Franklin Memorial Emergency Room staff who provided exceptional care for mom….thank you.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Stanley Lee Harter. She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Judy & Tim Allen of Rocky Mount; her son & daughter-in-law, Richard & Peggy Harter of Centreville, VA; granddaughter Lizzie Allen Kanoke (Kody) of Rocky Mount, VA; great-grandson to be (Gideon); and granddaughter Ruth Allen (significant other Brandon Pate) of Rocky Mount, VA. She is also survived by Hilda (sister) & Ray Kenny of Freedom, PA; Clair (brother) & Beverly Young of Darlington, PA; Gary (brother) & Judy Young of Washington, PA; Pam Harter (sister-in-law) of Christ Church, New Zealand; and three brothers-in-law: Kenny Harter of Sistersville, WVA; Jim & Marjorie Harter of Paden City, WVA; Gary & Vicki Harter of Wheeling, WVA.
We especially thank our Providence Baptist church family for their continual support through cards, phone calls, emails, prayers, and Facebook Live services during COVID. Dorothy knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and her favorite scripture was Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons of Franklin County, P.O. Box 915, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Gideons International is a Christian organization whose primary activity is distributing copies of the bible locally and throughout the world.
