Dorothy Hatcher Wray, 93, of Henry, died March 31, the way she preferred to live—surrounded by family. As a career homemaker, she expressed her deep love for her family by caring for them and making sure they were well fed. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her friends and family. During her long lifetime, many great historical events occurred; and although her role in those events was small, her life had a quiet but powerful impact on those she loved.
Dot Wray was born on October 23, 1923 in Franklin County to James Walter and Eula Mae Shively Hatcher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-nine years, Roy Wray; one brother, Archie Hatcher; and three sisters, Nona Hatcher, Goldie Bowling, and Vivian Pugh.
Surviving are her daughter, Linda Wray Carter of Martinsville and son, James Woodrow Wray of Henry; two sisters, Eva Burnett of Altavista and Irene Burnett of Ferrum; three grandchildren, Kelly Smith, Justin Spencer, and Dorothy Anderson; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Cassidy, and Emily Anderson; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Flowers will be accepted; however, memorial donations to Mountain Valley Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the charity of one’s choice are encouraged. Her family respectfully requests no food.
Her funeral will take place 2:00 p.m. Monday at Conner Bowman Funeral Home (Rt. 220 Chapel) with Reverend Joe Glass of Oak Level Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Wray Family Cemetery in Henry. The family will receive friends from 1:00 -2:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service at Conner Bowman Funeral Home & Crematory, Rt. 220 @ Wirtz Rd. Rocky Mount. (540)334-5151.
