Douglas Albert Hammje, age 74 of Boones Mill passed away Friday, April 11, 2014.
He was a twenty-one year veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in Vietnam and retired as Master Chief Petty Officer, and he was a proud member of the American Legion Post 6 in Rocky Mount.
Doug was born May 1, 1939 a son of the late Albert Hammje and Dola Geissen and also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary McMurty and Shirley Hammje.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Iva J. (Jody) Hammje; his children, Eric and Lara Hammje, Va Beach, Beth and David Mehaffey, Mechanicsville, Brenda and Kevin Agee, Roanoke; grandchildren, Douglas and Isabella Agee, Jesse and Josiah Mehaffey, Ivan and Merrick Hammje; brothers, Earl (Susie) Geissen, Bow, WA and John (Connie) Hammje, Alexandria, MN. He is also survived by many other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions may be made in Doug’s name to National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, Florida 33131.
The family would like to give a very special thanks to the Hermitage in Roanoke and the residents for their loving care and kindness shown to Doug and his family throughout his illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from Conner-Bowman Funeral Chapel 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 with Pastor Barry Witt and the Rev. James H. Steele officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. His Family will receive friends Monday, April 14, 2014 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, 62 VA Market Placve Drive, (Route 220 at Wirtz Road) Rocky Mount.
