Ed Richard Smith

Ed Richard Smith, 89, of Wirtz, VA departed this life early Sunday morning, February 17, 2019, at his home. He was born October 1, 1929 the son of the late John Calvin Smith and Julia Mary Smith. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Tansey, Ira, Clarence, Calvin, Henry, James, Monroe; two sisters, Marie Young, Fannie Dillon. He was recently honored for being very instrumental in getting the Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire department started; served as the Chief for 18 years and was a dedicated member for 40 years. He drove three generations of children to Burnt Chimney Elementary School over his 42 years of service to the Franklin County School System. He was a tobacco farmer and served in the Marines for 2 years where he trained at Parris Island and was stationed at Camp LeJeune. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Willard Smith; five children and spouses, Milton Smith (Beatrice), Maurice “Stick” Smith, Kathy Brown (Samuel), Debbie Dillon, Tammy Law (Kenny); ten grandchildren and spouses, Julie Ferguson (Travis), Eddie Dillon (Jessica), Veronica Dillon, Deirdre Brown, Kyle Brown (Tiffani), Bradley Smith (Huxley Greer), Brittany MacEachern (Steven), Davanna Law (Trenton Ferguson) Marcus Smith, Lillie Smith (Cody Mullins); five great grandchildren, Devin, Tucker, Isabella Dillon, Zayne Trail, Henry MacEachern; brother, Hugh Smith; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Smith, Zelda Robertson, Elsie Powell, Eddie Wilson. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Lynch Conner Bowman Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Dillon officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
