Gary Stephans Talbert, a lifelong resident of Patrick County and Martinsville, VA passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, at the age of 70. Born on June 12, 1954, Gary was the son of Eva Irene Hylton and Lewis Earl Talbert and the brother of Randy Talbert of Stuart, VA and Melvin Talbert of Fayetteville, NC.
Gary was a man of extraordinary kindness, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. Known for his talent in handyman repairs, and fixing small engines, Gary took great pride in working at the textile plant in Woolwine and repairing cars and mowers for members of the community. He found joy in —sitting on his Lazy-Boy with his dog Sparky in his lap; watching football on TV, listening to oldies on the radio; putting peanuts in his coke and sipping it; relaxing at the beach; and enjoying comedy TV shows and movies.
Above all, Gary treasured his family. He was a supportive husband for his late wife, Brenda Gates Smith, who passed away in April 2018. He was the proud father to his daughter, Stephanie Talbert Lincoln of Roanoke, VA, a great father-in-law to his son-in-law John Lincoln of Roanoke, VA, and a devoted grandfather to his granddaughter, Morgan Odum of Roanoke, VA, who brought him endless joy.
Gary’s kindness and selflessness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he loved so dearly. The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to those who were involved in the social support of and physical care for Gary during the last few weeks.
In remembrance of Gary and his compassion for animals…. the family requests that donations be made to the SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County in Gary’s name so neglected and/or unwanted animals can receive help toward a loving future in a safe and nurturing forever home.
