Hilda Lorraine Holland Kuchar, age 92, passed away May 11, 2016. Lorraine was born in Roanoke on December 24, 1923 to Wiley Peter and Nannie Lera Dillon Holland. She was a graduate of William Fleming High School where she enjoyed playing basketball and served as team captain. In 1943 Lorraine went to Baltimore to work as one of the “Rosie the Riverters” at Glenn L. Martin airplane factory. There she met and married her boss and the love of her life, Albert Charles Kuchar. In the early years of their marriage, they owned a neighborhood grocery store in Baltimore until Al persuaded Lorraine to buy a 200 acre farm in Hardy, VA. During their years of living on the farm, they raised Hereford beef cattle and enjoyed entertaining family and friends in their lovely remodeled farmhouse. She was a member of Saint Andrews Catholic Church and was active in the PTA and Home Demonstration Club. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, sewing clothes for her daughters, and cooking delicious foods of all kinds. She could do anything she put her mind to do and did it to perfection. Mama loved to do anything to help her family and friends. After 47 years enjoyable years of farm life, she and Al sold the farm and built a new home in Vinton in 1998.
Preceding Lorraine in death were her husband, Albert, of 63 years, in 2007; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary H. and Pat Ellis; sister-in-law Virginia F. Holland; brothers-in-law Edward Kuchar and Edmund Moore.
She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Bruce Cloud of Waynesboro, VA; Susan and Ben Whitesell of Boones Mill; three grandchildren and spouses, Hunter and Meghan Cloud of Charlottesville, Anthony and Faye Cundiff of Roanoke, and Lorraine (Lorrie Anne) and Cannon Watson of Farmville; three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Sophie Lorraine Watson, and Ashlee Cundiff. Also surviving are her brother, Ralph D. Holland; sister-in-law, Marie K. Moore; step-sister, Evelyn T. Hutcherson; and many dear nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to her devoted and loving next door neighbors, Mike and Billie Jean Atkinson.
