Hubert Quinn

Hubert Lee Quinn, 91, of Ferrum entered his Heavenly Home on October 30, 2023.  He is predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years, Olivia Atkins Quinn, his parents, Posey and Elsie Quinn, and his brother and sisters Roy Quinn, Lena Thurman, and Pauline Rakes. He leaves behind his oldest sister, Irene Stapper of Texas, three children Reginald Hubert Quinn of Ferrum, Phyllis Quinn Karavatakis (Nick) of Union Hall and Sherry Quinn Scott (Mark) of Rocky Mount, and his precious grandchildren, whom lovingly referred to him as “Big Papa”, and whom were the apple of his eye: Bradley Quinn (Amanda), Shannon Quinn (Leslie), Olivia Karavatakis, Oksana Sikes (Sam), Parker Scott and Brayden Scott. He was blessed to welcome  six great grandchildren later in life, Emma Quinn, Caleb Quinn, Holland Quinn, Hogan Quinn, Jamison Quinn, and Mary Rowan Sikes. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Hubert grew up hard in Endicott during the Great Depression. He learned the value of a dollar at a very young age and worked hard as a young boy supporting his family, after his father died when he was just seven years old. He was known in the community for his moonshine making skills and spent much of his young life at still sites, which was one of the only ways of making a living in the mountains. From his moonshining days, he learned what it meant to work hard, save a dollar, and run a business.  Hubert spent his professional career in the car business, starting at Stanley Chevrolet in Ferrum as general sales manager then moving to general sales manager at Ramsey Ford in Rocky Mount. In 1978, he opened his own car dealership, Quinn’s Autoville, where he retired.

With his conservative business skills, Hubert served on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors from 1992 until 2007 for the Blue Ridge District. He was known for his sharp wit and sometimes cantankerous ways, which he held on to until his last days. He was one to say what was on his mind, like it or not. He never sought out to impress anyone.

The family would like to express special gratitude to his three caregivers, Cynthia Boothe, Margie Hodges, and Jane “Sissy” Roberts as well as the excellent support received in Hubert’s last days with Carilion Hospice.
