Irene Wells Stout, age 87 of Rocky Mount, passed away peacefully in the arms of angels Tuesday, February 23, 2016 after a brief battle from cancer. Irene was born September 11, 1928 to the late Miller Wells and Maggie Lee Wells. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law Clarence Toney. Irene started her nursing career at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1951, where she later became Head Nurse of Orthopedics. She also was a Nursing Supervisor for Franklin Memorial Hospital for over 30 years, and worked as a Staff RN at both Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus OH and Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital Greensboro, NC. She was an avid gardener and attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where she was a member for many years. Irene was a beloved mother, grandmother and coworker. She was an intelligent, compassionate, loving, thoughtful and kind person who loved to laugh. Left to cherish her memory is her sons and daughter-in-law David and Susan Stout of Rocky Mount, Mark Kevin Stout of Woodstock, GA; her daughter Judy Toney of Roanoke; grandchildren Allison and Rick Krissinger of Wrightsville, PA, Christina and Joey Ford of Rome, GA, Mandy Molina, Douglasville, GA, Dr. Brian Toney of Richmond, VA, Samantha Toney of Plantation, FL, Shanna and Cornell Smith of Charlottesville, VA; seven great-grandchildren. Her family would like to thank Sallie Martin for her loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2300 McNeil Mill Rd, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday from Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Liz Lazenby officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will be receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home (Town Chapel) 140, Floyd Ave., Rocky Mount, VA
