Colonel James P. Newbill, (US Army, Ret.) went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 16, 2018. Jim was born on June 12, 1933 in Taylors Store, Virginia, to Daniel Clarence and Julia Elizabeth (Price) Newbill. He was the second oldest of seven children; Dan, Jim, Robert, Jack, Richard, Rachel and Joe.
He attended Harmony Elementary School through 3rd grade, then to Burnt Chimney from 4th through 9th grades and then Rocky Mount High School 10th through 12th grades. Jim attended Virginia Tech 1951-1955, majoring in Animal Husbandry and was an ROTC Cadet, graduating in 1955 as a 2nd Lieutenant. First reporting to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, for Basic Ordinance training. After that he was deployed to many duty stations, which included Vietnam, Metz, France, Ft. Benning, GA, Shiraz, Iran, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, and the Pentagon in D.C., Ft. Shafter in Honolulu, HI, Sacramento, CA, and many more. Jim retired as a Full Bird Colonel July 31, 1985 becoming employed by the National Wild Turkey Federation as a Regional Field Supervisor on June 25th, 1991, which he retired from in June, 2003. His life passion was turkey hunting, which he arduously continued through 2017. He took his first turkey, which was called in by his dad, on April 30, 1964 in Wirtz, Virginia, which was just the beginning of a total of 159 turkeys throughout his life.
Jim married Eliane, (from France), the mother of his three children Linda Lorraine, Virginia Price and James Hunter. She died of leukemia in 1972. He then married Rachael Owens in 1973, who passed away in 2008. Then he married, Jan Chase in September 2009. They lived on a 290-acre tree farm in Shiloh, GA with their Brittany, Shiloh. Jim was also preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Daniel Clarence Newbill.
He is survived by his wife Jan C. Newbill, of Shiloh, GA; three children, Linda Newbill Vaught (Ron) of Providence Forge, VA., Virginia Newbill Sharitz (Bobby) of Mableton, GA, and James Hunter Newbill of Tulsa, OK; seven grandchildren, Michael David Schurz and James Richard Schurz, both of Houston, TX, Robert Clark Schurz of Poquoson, VA, 1st Lt. Kelly Nicole Schurz of Ft. Bragg, NC, Charles Price Sharitz, Julia Elaine Sharitz and Marlee Ann Newbill all of Atlanta, GA; four brothers, Robert Alexander Newbill, Jack Harry Newbill, Richard Eugene Newbill, and Joseph William Newbill; one sister, Elizabeth Rachel Yungman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services in Georgia will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Chapel of Manchester First Baptist Church, with Dr. Craig Williamson officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 9:00 pm Tuesday, September 18, at Cox Funeral Home in Manchester.
Funeral services in Virginia will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 21, 2018 at Burnt Chimney United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Vaught officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Newbill Family Cemetery. The Newbill Family will receive friends Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, VA.
