Jean H. Bussey

July 20, 1928 — February 1, 2017

A beautiful angel, Jean Bussey (Mama Jean), age 88 of Rocky Mount left this Earth to be with her Lord on the morning of February 1, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 20, 1928, a daughter of the late Elnor H. and Dan Hudson and she was also preceded in death by a son, David Bussey; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Harry Boyd; brother, W.D. Hudson; brother-in-law Oscar Dillon; and son-in-law Claude Elwood “Woodize” Adams. She is survived by her faithful, caring, and loving husband of 68 ½ years, Claude Bussey; daughter Elaine Peters (Riley); daughter-in-law Vernell Bussey; daughter Marcia Austin (fiancée Marshall Staton); son, Neal Bussey (Tiffany); her grandchildren April Sloan (Brandon), Adam Peters (fiancée Megan Dillon), Christopher Austin, and her great-grandson Carter Sloan. She is also survived by her sister Ethel Dillon; and sister-in-law Doris Hudson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jean grew up in Patrick Springs, VA, moved to Canada following her marriage in 1948, and then resided in Rocky Mount after Elaine was born. She not only raised her own children, but helped raise her grandchildren and other children whom she cared for like they were her own. She was a faithful member of Gogginsville United Methodist Church for over 67 years. She met numerous friends and enjoyed many adventures throughout her many travels and camping trips in life including most of the continental United States, Alaska, and Canada. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor, and friend to so many. She was a Godly woman who was looked up to by all who knew her and no one left her presence without a full belly and a full heart. The family would like to thank her neighbors, her Gogginsville church family and Good Samaritan Hospice for all the wonderful care provided to her and for all the love that was shown to her. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to Gogginsville United Methodist Church at 111 Gogginsville Road Rocky Mount, VA 24151 or Good Samaritan Hospice at 2408 Electric Road Roanoke, VA 24018. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Gogginsville United Methodist Church with Pastors Kathryn Budzik and Wade Sirk officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, from 5-8 p.m. at the church. The Bussey Family is being served by Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, 62 VA Market Place Drive (Route 220 at Wirtz Road), Rocky Mount. www.connerbowman.com Her children arise and call her bless; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Proverbs 31:28-29
