Jesse James Campbell, 71, of Wirtz, VA and Catawba, VA, husband of Carolyn B. Campbell, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 11, 2021. Jesse was born November 22, 1949 in Waynesboro, VA to Manley “Monk” Campbell and Pearl Taylor Campbell Watson. Jesse was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War. He was Special Forces, MACVSOG, RECON and was part of the third CCN HALO Team, doing covert operations in LAOS and Vietnam. Jesse earned 2 Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, CIB, VCAM and others. He is among others in the book “SOG A Photo History of the Secret Wars” by John Plaster. Jesse graduated from Waynesboro High School. He worked at Lawrence Transportation, Thiokol, Baber’s Heating and Air. Later, he was an overseas Contractor for many years. Jesse was in Kabul, Afghanistan for the United States Flag raising at the U. S. Embassy shortly after September 11, 2001. Jesse loved God, family and his country. He loved being on site with our military troops. Jesse was a member of Sherando United Methodist Church and also attended Craig Valley Gospel Fellowship Church. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Manley and Pearl; brother, Dennis M. Campbell and wife, Betty. Surviving family includes wife, Carolyn Campbell; children, Barbara Voorhees (Daniel) of Slippery Rock, PA, Jim Campbell, Pittsburgh, PA, Roger Bartley (Romonda) of Vinton, VA, Michael Bartley (Crystal) of Waynesboro, VA; grandchildren, Andrew Meager, Brittney Aaron (Zach), Vanessa and Allison Bartley, Blake Bartley; great grandchildren, Luna and Ashton Aaron; sister, Judy Adams (Robert) of Madison Heights, VA, Roger H. Campbell (Jean) of Grottoes, VA, Benny R. Campbell of Waynesboro, VA, Randy J. Campbell (Martha) of Grottoes, VA. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Jesse enjoyed making friends and helping others. He had 3 special friends who helped him during his final days – John, Tyler and Ken. His body will be cremated and his ashes spread by family at a later time. A Celebration of Life Service will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers the family suggest to make donations to The Gary Sinise Foundation, P.O. Box 368, Woodland Hills, CA 91365.
