Joann Brown Poindexter, beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend entered eternal rest peacefully on February 11, 2025, in the comfort of her home at the age of 83. Born on August 24, 1941, in Franklin County, Va., Joann was the cherished wife of the late James D. Poindexter and a devoted member of her family and community.
Joann was predeceased by her husband, her parents, Richard W. and Edith P. Brown, and her brother, Richard L. Brown and wife, Betty.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her brothers Samuel W. Brown and his wife, Kathy, Michael D. Brown and his wife, Twyla, sister-in-law, Nancy Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will miss her deeply.
During her final days, Joann was surrounded by the loving care of her dedicated caregivers, including Shareka Lee, Linda Woods, and Louise Novia. Shareka, alongside her sister-in-law Kathy, was a constant and steadfast presence by Joann’s side, offering comfort and support with love and devotion. The family would also like to thank Terri and Jessica with Affinity Hospice Care.
Joann’s love extended beyond her human family to her two beloved cats, Smokey and Tux, who brought her much joy in her later years.
Joann graduated from National College of Business and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree from George Washington University. It is important to note Joann was the first person who graduated summa cum laude from the College of Charleston; the highest honor a scholar may achieve.
Joann pursued careers in various fields throughout her lifetime. Her admirable ability to connect with people and plethora of knowledge placed her alongside real-estate moguls, lawyers, military leaders, and resort developers. Joann’s work endeavors provided her with the opportunity to travel to marvelous places around the world. She was able to experience many different cultures in which she was highly interested and grateful to experience as Joann was an adventurer. She eventually found herself in Cancun, Mexico and it became her second home as she fell in love with Cancun and all it had to offer. Throughout her lifetime, she introduced many friends and family to Cancun and spent countless times at this magical place with her loved ones.
Joann was an avid reader of books of all genres. She especially loved to read about animals as she had many cherished animal acquaintances throughout her life. She adored her pets and always made sure they lived like kings and queens.
Joann’s warmth, kindness, and generosity will be remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy of love and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
