Joe was born March 26, 1938 in Rockingham NC, to the late Clarence and Alice Stogner. He grew up in a Christian home and became a true Southern gentleman, offering a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
As a child his parents instilled the values of independence, hard work and compassion, traits that steered the course of his life. The sparkle of his blue eyes reflected his kindness to everyone he met.
Joe proudly served in the US Air Force Strategic Air Command for 6 years.
He had a distinguished career as a Professor of Environmental Science at Ferrum College for 35 Years. Joe earned his PhD. from Virginia Tech in Environmental Science. He led many student excursions to the US Virgin Islands to study the coral reefs and plant life. Students knew him as a tough but fair professor with a profound dedication to their success. He advised and helped many students obtain excellent jobs, overseeing their internships, and creating many lifetime friends along the way.
During his retirement, Joe enjoyed travel and being in nature. He also enjoyed being indoors too, watching football, basketball and almost any sport with a ball. He became a professional woodturner in recent years. His bowls, boxes, vessels, and urns are in many private collections.
