Leland Mitchell

Walker Leland Mitchell, 82, of Sontag, Virginia passed away at home on July 30, 2022. Born to Walker Baine Mitchell and Gladys Pearl Hodges Mitchell in Sontag on April 26, 1940, he attended Sontag Elementary School and graduated from Franklin County High School. Leland was a lifelong farmer, farming tobacco and beef cattle. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Leland was elected to the Franklin County Board of Supervisors in 2006, representing the Snow Creek District, and served as Chairman in 2020. Previously, he also served as President of the Franklin County Farm Bureau and the Sontag Ruritan Club. Leland loved playing slow pitch softball and hunting. Leland was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Mary A. Mitchell; brother, M.T. Mitchell; sister, Betty Jean Hodges; and special uncle- and aunt-in-law, Walter and Mildred Woody. Leland leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Janet Haynes Mitchell. Also left behind to cherish his memory are his three children, William Baine Mitchell (Sherrie) of Snow Creek, Walter Pyrant Mitchell (Kimberly) of Sontag, and Leigh Anne Pomerleau (Garry) of Marion, NC; six grandchildren, William Walker Mitchell, Noah Clay Mitchell, Jacob Thomas Pomerleau, Simon Douglas Pomerleau, Katie Ashton Mitchell, and Zoe Elizabeth Mitchell; two sisters, Daphne Woody and Mary Belle Thompson (Brooks); sisters- and brothers-in-law, Audrey Mitchell, Jim and Kitty Haynes, Connie and Charles Copenhaver; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Beulah Baptist Church with Pastor Eric Winn officiating. Interment will follow in the Mitchell Family Cemetery at the family homeplace. The Mitchell family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday, August 2nd from 6 to 8 PM. The family respectfully requests that food and flowers be omitted, and they also request that if you plan to attend the visitation and/or service, please wear your masks due to the ongoing COVID pandemic even if you are vaccinated.
