William McClain “Mac” Torrence, 61, of Rocky Mount passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 30, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 8, 1959 in Rocky Mount, Virginia to Florence Davis Torrence and the late William McClain “Bill” Torrence, Sr. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 33 years, Margaret Stone Torrence and his children, who were the joy of his life, Davis (Jennifer) Torrence and Elizabeth (Cooper) Woolson, his mother Florence, and sister Mary (Jay) Guy and niece Serina of Richmond. Mac is survived by his Uncle Marvin Torrence of Lynchburg, and his Aunt Veta Davis Woody of Roanoke, his sisters and brothers in law, Morris Ledbetter, James (Linda) Stone, Julia (JT) Stone, Susan Brown, Marian (Robert) Meeks, Mavis Woods, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mac additionally leaves behind his faithful chocolate lab, Chippy, whom he loved tremendously. Mac was preceded in death by his father, his mother and father-in-law Wilda and James Stone, sister-in-law Katie Ledbetter, and brother-in-law Arnold Brown.
Mac graduated from Franklin County High School in 1977 and went on to attend Ferrum College where he played collegiate golf. He pursued a career in civil engineering and manufacturing, working for Cooper Wood Products and CTS&I Millwork. Mac was a faithful member of Central Grace Church, where he served as treasurer. Mac was a loyal, loving friend to so many who will be remembered for his big smile, genuine hugs, sense of humor, and his generosity and love for others.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 2nd from 2-4 pm and 5-7 pm at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home (62 Virginia Market Place Dr, Rocky Mount, VA 24151) and a memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3rd at 2:00 pm at Central Grace Church (3596 Franklin St, Rocky Mount, VA) with Pastor Paul Mahan officiating. Interment will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (netrf.org).
