Macie James Mullins Woods, age 99, of Ferrum died peacefully Thursday morning, November 7, 2013. She joins her heavenly family members; parents Kemper and Louisa James; step mother, Ella Gillispe James; husbands, James H. Mullins and Wilton Woods; three sisters, Helena Engle, Beulah Moran, Ada Moran; two brothers, Otho James, Albert James; half brother, Donald James. Macie Woods served the community through her professional career as an educator, her volunteer service in the community, and her commitment to the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1932. She began a long and distinguished career in public education as a teacher at St. John’s in the Mountain at Endicott. After earning her certificate from Radford College in 1935 she continued to teach in small country schools in Franklin County. In 1962 she received her Bachelor’s Degree from Radford College. The final 22 years of her career were spent at Ferrum Elementary School, from which she retired in 1975. Throughout her life, Macie Woods was committed to helping those with special needs. After her retirement her commitment and faith in her Lord continued in the form of service to her church, Bethany United Methodist Church and the community. She often took time to entertain residents at local nursing homes with her piano and autoharp talents. In 1995 Macie Woods was the Recipent of the Benjamin M. Beckham Medallion as one of Ferrum College’s most ardent supporters. Surviving are her two sons, Harold Mullins and his wife, Mary of Ferrum, Neal Mullins and wife, Sandra of Rocky Mount; friend and former daughter-in-law, Iva Mullins; step son, Jimmy Woods; three grandchildren, Vickie and Mike Gandy, Gail and David Quasbarth, Tommy Mullins; two great grandchildren, Lauren and Sam Gandy; three step grandchildren, Danille, Britany and Jessie Woods; many wonderful nieces and nephews Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Lynch Conner Bowman Funeral Home with Rev. Basik “Peter” Choi officiating. Interment will follow in Story Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the Trinity Mission Nurses and the special CNA girls; also home caregiver, Susan Cooper.
