Martha F. Cornog

February 22, 1929 — March 13, 2012

On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 Martha Frances (Huntt) Cornog (83), said farewell to her earthly home here in Boones Mill, Virginia and stepped into her eternal home to join the Heavenly Choir and sit at the feet of Jesus. Martha was born in Landover, Maryland, to Eugene Franklin Huntt and Edith Zerelda (Wise) Huntt. She grew up in Washington, D.C. It was there that she met the love of her life James (Jim) Cornog, her husband of 67 years. She began her work career with the U.S. Department of Navy in Washington, D.C. She later worked as a settlement officer for several real estate title firms. As a young working mother, Martha’s favorite past time was “duckpin” bowling, setting a national record in 1969 with a 210 game. As a homemaker, she took pride in her home decorating talents, especially at Christmas, her favorite time of the year. Music has always been an important part of her life. Martha enjoyed attending Southern Gospel concerts with friends, but enjoyed singing even more. During her lifetime, she sang alto in church choirs at every church she attended and belonging to several ladies trios over the years. But none compared to the joy she had with her daughter, Debbie and special friend Mary Cook in the Gift of Grace Trio. Singing for more than a decade at her church, the Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Rocky Mount and sharing their beautiful harmonies with many other churches and nursing homes throughout Franklin County and the Roanoke Valley. She also enjoyed traveling to Maryland to spend time with her daughter Linda and family. Before her illness, she looked forward to her special “day trips” on Wednesday with daughter, Pat. Martha is survived by her husband Jim and three daughters: Linda Rudd (Harry), Bowie, Maryland; Pat Grisetti (John), Boones Mill, Virginia; Debbie Wood (Gregg) of Rocky Mount, Virginia; and her half-brother, James Eugene Daniels, Jr. of Apollo Beach, FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kenny Rudd of Dallas, GA; Michelle Caime of Scottsdale, AZ; April Grisetti of Santa Fe, NM; Jenny Grisetti of Christiansburg, VA; Josh Grisetti of Long Island City, NY; Angie McGhee of Boones Mill, VA; and Tim Lawless of Boones Mill, VA. Nine great-grandchildren, Jenna Rudd, Lydia Rudd, Daniel Caime, Rachel Caime, Micah Caime, Brittany McGhee, Rylan McGhee, Andrew McGhee and Laci Lawless also survive. The family would like to thank the support and care of the Carilion Clinic Hospice of Roanoke, especially Pat Quarles, Missy Ring, Kristy Waldron, Jake Bond, Myrna Lumsden, and Shirl Mederlet as well as the overwhelming love and support from many friends, relatives, and members of the Franklin Heights Baptist Church with their cards, visits, phone calls, food and much needed hugs and prayers. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, 62 Virginia Market Place Drive, Rocky Mount, VA. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 110 Hilltop Drive, Rocky Mount, VA with Rev. J. Larry Holland, Dr. Stan Parris, Rev. Ken Richardson and Rev. Mark Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at the Bethlehem Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Boones Mill, Virginia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the Franklin Heights Baptist Church Music Ministry.
