Mary Serena Sledd Matthews

On Tuesday, May 23 Mary Serena (Sledd) Matthews of Callaway, VA peacefully left this earth at the age of 89. She left behind her son William Alan Rogers, wife Connie; grandchildren Cindy Cupps, Christina Brooks, Cathrine Rogers, Stephanie Griffin, April Rogers and David Rogers; 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; sisters Eva Ashworth, Cecile Bussey and husband Fred, and Norma Coates. Serena was greeted at the gates of heaven by her beloved family that went before her: daughter Linda Knight, son Michael Rogers, parents EW Sledd Sr, Mary Sledd and step-mother Dolly Sledd, and her 5 brothers Joe, EW Jr, Lloyd, Harry, Pete Sledd and sister Ethel Scott. We rest assured there is a big family reunion occurring! Serena grew up in Callaway, VA with her large family on the farm. As an adult, she lived in Charleston, SC; Callaway, VA; and most recently Conway, SC; where her son Alan and wife Connie cared for her as she resided in Kingston Nursing Home. James 4:14 As you read this obituary and reflect on life, are you leaving a legacy behind that others will miss your morning fog when it lifts? Serena's morning fog will be remembered as her having a detailed eye and immense concentration that she used to complete elaborate puzzles. Her greatest pleasures in her final days were feeding her birds Ben and Jerry, indulging in coffee ice cream, listening to CNN and enjoying the times her family visited. Serena lived a long life with many memories we will cherish here on earth as we determine what legacy we will leave as our morning fog. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Lynch Conner Bowman Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in Pigg River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
