Mattie Thurman Johnson

Mattie Susan Thurman Johnson, age 93, formerly of Glade Hill, passed away at the Hermitage Home in Roanoke Saturday, February 15, 2014. Mrs. Johnson was born September 10, 1920 to the late William Robert Thurman and Dora Pugh Thurman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Paul Johnson; son Robert Johnson; and daughter Rebecca Johnson Hodges. Mrs. Johnson was a longtime member of Redwood United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years and sang in the choir. Surviving is her daughter Diane Holland (Ellis); son-in-law Earl Hodges; sisters-in-law Juanita Thurman, Alma Johnson and Elsie Poindexter; grandchildren Steve Carter (Rosana), Cindy Gibson (Larry), Robin Booth (Ronnie); great-grandchildren Dustin, Nikolas, Dylan, Matthew and Melissa; many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Redwood United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. Funeral services will be conducted from Redwood United Methodist Church 10 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Brad Dulaney officiating. Interment will follow in the Thurman Family Cemetery.
