Mattie Catherine Massey

Mattie Catherine Massey, age 92, of Rocky Mount, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, December 29, 2018. Mattie was the youngest of six girls born to the late Robert and Virginia Lumpkin, in Union Hall, Va. On her 21st birthday, she married Cletis Massey, who preceded her in death in 1992. Together they raised six sons and lived in Arlington, VA and Newport News, VA, before returning to Franklin County in 1968. Mattie may have been small in stature, but she had a giant love for God and her family. Her faith was a beacon to all who knew her. She was a hard worker, a gifted gardener and her passion for music was passed on to her sons. While she was the inspiration for songs written about her, she was also a gifted writer and poet. Her sense of humor and feisty nature made sure there were smiles every time you saw her. Despite all the trials this life held for her, she never once complained. She was a living example of gratitude. What a blessing. In addition to her husband, parents, and sisters, Mattie was also preceded in death by three sons: Larry Massey, Wesley Massey and Danny Massey. She is survived by three sons: Ron (Diana) Massey, Jerry (Donna) Massey, and Timmy (Patty) Massey, along with 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. There are many nieces, nephews, and dear friends, whom she also adored. Our deepest gratitude to her cherished caregivers, Regina Fralin Stanley, Molly Massey and Jessi Ferguson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home.
