Nell Hauldren Booth

Nell Hauldren Booth, 91, passed away, June 5, 2016, at her home in Penhook, Va. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Grey Booth and two brothers, Tom Hauldren and Chad Hauldren. She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Donna Grey Booth and Tippie Elizabeth Walston: two sisters, Lena Jo Blain and Nada Rose Gabardi: a sister-in-law, Helen Hauldren: a niece and 6 nephews. Mrs. Booth spent her youth in an area of WV called Big Ugly Creek, where she attended a one room school, taught by her father, until she was in the seventh grade. The family then moved to Hamlin, WV, where she attended high school and then attended both Marshall College and West Virginia University. She accepted a job with Piedmont Airlines in Winston-Salem, NC, where she met her future husband who was a pilot for Piedmont. They were married in l953, went to Cuba on their honeymoon and then made their home in Penhook where Mr. Booth owned a farm. Mrs. Booth earned a degree from Radford College and then became a teacher at Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount, VA. She taught government, history and social studies and was the adviser for the high school newspaper, The Eagle. She taught there for many years and was a very popular teacher. Mrs. Booth helped her husband operate their rather large farm in Penhook and after his death she continued to run the farm with the help of a special family friend, Richard Robertson. For many years they have had a successful business of raising Black Angus cattle. Mrs. Booth liked to travel and with her husband and daughters, visited several countries in both Europe and Africa; they also visited Canada. After her husbands death she continued to travel with different family members. She visited Jamaica, Nova Scotia several of the National Parks, made a tour of historical sites of VA and traveled to many different states, including Hawaii and Alaska. Mrs. Booth had many interests. Among them was taking part in activities at the Forrest Hill Christian Church where she was a long time member. She also liked to watch horse racing, getting together with friends, talking on the phone with her sisters about the fun times they had growing up, spending time at the beach at Kiawah Island, SC, and entertaining in her home. For many years she had an annual Christmas party and she also enjoyed furnishing refreshments at her home for the Christmas Carolers from the church. She loved her dog, Banjo, and her cats, Pinky and Stinky. In her later years Mrs. Booth was blessed to have as caretakers, Clara Coles and then Tamara Bowling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ASPCA, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929 or Forrest Hill Christian Church, 13181 Snow Creek Road, Penhook, Virginia 24137. A memorial service will be conducted from Forrest Hill Christian Church 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 with Ted Clifton, Minister officiating. Arrangements by Conner-Bowman Funeral Home & Crematory, 62 VA Market Place Drive (Route 220 @ Wirtz Road), Rocky Mount.
