Nellie Scott Rakes

Our Mom, Nellie Scott Rakes, 86, of Ferrum, VA passed away on Monday, November 16, 2015. She was born January 26, 1929 and grew up in Ferrum. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Sally Scott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas (Clem) Rakes; two sisters, Wilma Woods, Elma Young; seven brothers, Paul, Lewis, W. B., Grover, Fred, Nelson and Grady Scott. She worked at J. P. Stevens for over 40 years. She is survived by her two sons, Otis Rakes (Gloria), Tommy Rakes (Kathy); along with five grandchildren Kristina Whittington, Teresa Reynolds (Eric), Scott Rakes (Kristina Smith), Kimya Rakes, Nikki Hall. She enjoyed and loved dearly her six great grandchildren, Selena Rakes, Hayden Hall, Ainslee Hall, Amaya Hall, and two special great grandchildren, Addison Whittington (whom she helped take care of her until high school), Colten Reynolds (whom was good at giving Grandma hugs and kisses). She is also survived by her brother, who stood beside her and never let her want for anything, Leo (Buck) Scott and wife, Geraldine. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Her wit, kindness and caring love will be missed and remembered by all. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Lynch Conner Bowman Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Poland, Rev. Ron Coleman and Rev. Elwood Rakes officiating. Interment will follow in St. James United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
