Norwood C. Turner

January 24, 1923 — August 11, 2015

Norwood Cordell Turner, Sr., age 92, of Boones Mill passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2015. He was a World War II Veteran in The United States Army from November 27, 1942 to January 10, 1946 serving as radio operator on a transport ship. He retired from Appalachian Power Company with 37 years of dedicated service. He was a faithful member of Boones Mill United Methodist Church and served as Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the Trustees and dedicated member of the choir for many years. He was also a member of Boones Mill Lions Club Member, and Isaac’s Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M. Mr. Turner was the son of the late Crawford and Reecie Wright Turner. He was also preceded in death by his wife Esther Saul Turner; Daughter, Imogene Turner Marshall; sister and brothers-in-Law, Raeburn T. Angle (Ruthford), and Harry L. Angle; step-mother, Ada Wray Turner. He is survived by his son, N. Cordell Turner, Jr. and wife Marva; daughter, Amanda Turner Baxter and husband Donald; four grandchildren, Lara Lee Strickler and husband Stan, Gregory A. Marshall and wife Molly, Kevin G. Marshall and wife Amanda, and Tara Turner and friend Jacob Wilkins; five great-grandchildren, Riley Marshall, Owen Marshall, Bailey Marshall, Morgan Marshall, and Alex Strickler; brother, Zane Turner and wife Edna; sister, Maxine Turner Angle; son-in-law, Gerald Marshall and wife Linda, and several other family members and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be missed by all. The family would like to thank Dr. David Cummings and all the staff of Mountain 8 West PCU for the care and compassion given. His favorite quote in which he repeated during his last days was “Old Soldiers never die, they just fade away,” by General Douglas Macarthur. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home with Rev. Warren Carswell officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park with military honors. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Boones Mill United Methodist Church, Norwood C. Turner, Sr. Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 288, Boones Mill, VA 24065.
