Reva Brown Hutcherson, 92, of Rocky Mount, passed away on February 14, 2015. She was born and raised on a farm in Burnt Chimney in a house designed by her mother Cordie, and built from timber off the farm land. She grew up during the depression surrounded by seven lovely sisters and brothers, working the farm and operating a community telephone switchboard. One of her favorite stories was of her younger sister finding their father’s Christmas whiskey, giving it to the chickens in their feed, leading to a very Merry Christmas for the chickens.
Reva loved her church, her granddaughters and flirting with their boyfriends, her family and friends, her roses, making cookies for all who came to visit, and the many friends and neighbors she knew and encountered in her walks around town (after a fender bender when she was younger, she never drove again and we can all thank the lord for that). She loved working with her husband George, Mr. N. Morris, Pat Morris, and Flora Morris at N. Morris Department store. She had a very special place in her heart for all the wonderful customers they were privileged to serve over the many years the store was in business. She was a member of Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church, and a past member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Reva was preceded in death by her mother and father Cordie and Taylor Brown; her husband of sixty years George Hutcherson Sr.; her brothers Everett, Rural, and Dempsey Brown; sisters Marie Davis, Angie Turner, Lamona Clark, and Maime Hudson; brothers and sister- in- law Isabelle Brown, Alma Brown, C.J. Davis, Kent Turner, Terrell Clark, Arthur Hudson, Frank Hutcherson, Guy and Ruby Amos, Jesse and Helen Amos, and Mary and Cecil Gravely; and very special people in her life Mr. N. Morris, Pat Morris, Flora Morris, and Pauline Tyree.
She is survived by her son George Hutcherson, Jr. and his wife Sylvia, and her granddaughters Katie and Molly Hutcherson around whom her life in later years revolved. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Doris Brown, and also survived by many of the most wonderful and exceptional nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews one could ever have.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 17 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM and will be immediately followed by services conducted by Rev. Russ Merritt in the Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home chapel located on Taliaferro St. in Rocky Mount. Burial to follow in High Street Cemetery, Rocky Mount.
