How fitting it is that on Easter Sunday morning April 8th, 2012 Ronald Doy Smith of Rocky Mount, left his suffering behind and went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Throughout his life Ronald had struggled with sickness and had spent time in and out of the hospital. Today that suffering is over.
He was born to Madison and Aletha May Smith on December 23, 1944. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a twin brother Donald, his Grandparents Jesse and Gertie Dillon and Elsie Hodges who raised him after his Mother died at an early age.
He is survived by his daughter Heather Smith Day(Warren) and his beloved grandson Kaleb Ferguson. Also surviving are special cousins Clyde Bernard, Diane Dillon, and Brenda Hodges, and a host of friends and family. He had two very special friends, his “Huggy Bear” and neighbor Neil Wray. Words cannot express our thanks for all of the help they gave to him throughout his sickness. He also leaves behind his beloved dog “Slick” who provided so much companionship and comfort to him.
Ronald’s passion in life was the “old-time” music, playing his guitar and singing. Until recently, most weekends he could be found somewhere along the “Crooked Road” playing, singing, and dancing. The “Crooked Road” group was like a family to him, and he made many wonderful friends. Today he joined the Heavenly Choir, bluegrass section.
Our special thanks go to Dr Robert Strong and the staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their excellent and loving care during this time.
Funeral Services will be conducted by his Pastor Kendall Smith and Rev David Robertson at Conner Bowman Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, April 10th at 2:00PM. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12:00PM until service time. Burial will follow in the Dillon Family Cemetery.
