Early in the morning of August 12, 2013, Samuel “Sam” Wiley Nolen, age 76, of Rocky Mount, VA went to join his Lord and Savior. Remaining to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Alice Nadine Puckett Nolen of 54 years this coming September 25; much loved daughters, Angela Robin Nolen of Rocky Mount, Terri Elizabeth Nolen of Roanoke; precious granddaughter, Gracyn Alice, to whom he was “Papa”. Also surviving are two sisters, Juanita Houchins of Floyd, Gloria (Otis) Rakes of Rocky Mount; brother, Donald (Becky) Nolen of Goodview, VA; brother-in-law, Bob Puckett of Fairplay, SC; and many nieces and nephews. Sam enjoyed simple things, was a true gentleman and an honorable man. He along with his wife attended Faith Assembly of God Church in Ferrum, where he enjoyed fellowship with his friends in the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Second Half Ministries Group for which he served as “bus driver” for their many trips and activities. In his spare time he liked to listen to old time bluegrass and traditional country music along with visiting with family and friends. Sam lived in Franklin County most of his life. He served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Thule, Greenland and Homestead, Florida. He retired in 1999 with 32 years of service from Stanley Furniture Company. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Friday at Lynch Conner Bowman Funeral Home with Pastor David Braxton officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 2:00 P.M. before the service. Interment will follow in the McAlexander Family Cemetery, 20815 Franklin Street, Ferrum, VA 24088. After the interment friends and family are invited to the Faith Ministry Center in Ferrum to visit and share a meal together. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Faith Assembly Church of God Church Building Fund, 1526 Thompson Ridge Road, Ferrum, VA 24088.
