Shelby Jean Masterson

May 7, 1938 — June 3, 2018

Shelby Jean Akers Masterson formerly of Christiansburg VA was born May 7, 1938 and passed away at the age of 80 on Sunday June 3, 2018. The air had a wonderful breeze blowing and the birds were singing as she received her wings and flew into God's loving arms to live forever more. Jean loved her Lord very much. Each day she would thank God for the beautiful sunshine and fresh air. She is preceded in death by her son Ron James, mother Mary E. Akers, maternal grandparents Harvey and Lillian Akers, Aunts Ellen Reed, Catherine Sipple, Alma Huff, Mae Stephenson, Betty Simmons, Uncles Leroy, David, Tom, Frank. Jean dearly loved her family and missed them so much. She is survived by Uncle Audrey Reed of Christiansburg VA and Aunt Lydia Akers of New Jersey, and 1st cousins Conchita Robinson Dublin VA, Rannie Akers and Becky of Pulaski VA, Jackie Akers and Carole of Grantsville GA, Kathleen Bessler and Rick Pulaski VA , Josie Akers San Antonia Texas, Dale Akers and Leissa of Pulaski VA, Madeline Akers Christiansburg VA, Roger Sipple and Amy of North Carolina , Audrey Walters and Clyde of Riner VA, Debbie Cox and Donald of Riner VA, Hans Akers and Sherry of Ohio, David Akers and Ellen Akers, Andrew Simmons and Shirley of Boones Mill VA, Gail Foster and Ricky of Hardy VA, Janice Atwood and Lennie of Roanoke VA, Kenneth Simmons and Theresa of Hardy VA, Charles Simmons and Sherry of Wirtz VA, Calvin Simmons and Gina of Moneta VA, Gene Simmons and Jenny of Penhook VA, Donna Hugus and Glenn of Covington VA, Julie Kirk of Wirtz VA, and Rachel Arnett of Wirtz VA and many other cousins down the line. Jeanie was a sweet loving lady and would help others in need. Jean was Jean, strong willed and very independent. She was a quirky and loving lady always smiling for most part. Jean was hospitalized March 2 and upon release could no longer live alone and went to live with her cousin Rachel who loved her so much and cared for her until death. Rachel always said Jeanie was the BIG sister she never had, they were like two peas in pod. Oh boy she did not like having someone to take care of her and fought it and every day she would say I wonder if Dr. B will let me go back home. Folks, cancer is not a pretty picture. Jeanie did not want a funeral or viewing , she wanted to be taken from her bed to crematory. Fly high Jeanie and know that you are so loved by your family. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her. A memorial will be held at a later date to celebrate her life and her ashes laid to rest at the New Dublin Presbyterian Church Cemetery by her mother. Arrangements by Conner-Bowman Funeral Home & Crematory, 62 VA Market Place Drive, Rocky Mount, VA.
