William (Bill) Golden, 65, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va. and West Palm Beach, Fla., died Monday, March 29, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. Bill, son of the late Irving and Muriel Golden, was born on May 2, 1944, in The Bronx, N.Y. and later moved with his mother to West Palm Beach. He graduated from The University of Florida in 1966 with a degree in advertising. After graduation, he moved to Durham, N.C. with his first wife, Lane Bergman. There he worked for The Record Bar, Inc. which, with his help, grew into one of the largest music retailers in the country. In 1987, he sold his interest in The Record Bar and worked as a consultant for various businesses, including the Domino's pizza franchise in Durham. He later became a co-owner of that business and continued to operate the franchise association until his death. In 1995, he relocated to Smith Mountain Lake, Va. where he enjoyed golfing with his buddies, boating, and Duke basketball. He took every opportunity to spend time with friends, family, and his beloved dog Pinkie. Those who knew him will treasure memories of his sense of humor, kind nature, and warm heart. Survivors include his loving wife of 14 years, Peggy Balla, and his four children, Cameron Golden and her husband, Daniel Pass, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Page Coleman and her husband, Arthur Coleman, of Arlington, Va., Clark Houchens, of Charleston S.C., Aaron Houchens, of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Norman Golden and Harvey Golden, both of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Luca Pass, Caroline Coleman and Andrew Coleman. A private service officiated by Rabbi Kathy Cohen of Temple Emanuel will be held at the home in Smith Mountain Lake on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at the Waterfront Country Club in Moneta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge New York City 132 W. 32nd St. c/o Tanisha Deane and/or CHIP of Roanoke Valley.
